The skin on the feet is the thickest on the body ranging from 5-10 times thicker than anywhere else on the body. It also comprises the largest organ of the body. Despite its thickness and durability, it still needs protection. The skin on the feet can be prone to damage because of their neglect and abuse. Factors such as climate, regular showers and harsh soaps can strip the skin of its protective oils, causing dry cracked skin.

Seasons do matter to the conditions of the feet. During the colder times of the year, heaters kick on, the house’s humidity levels decrease, and skin tends to dry out through evaporation. Therefore, it is imperative that a moisturizer less susceptible to evaporation be used. During the warmer times of the year, the skin is exposed to the outdoor sun and higher impact activities.

Daily moisturizers can be a good way to keep the feet from cracking and to decrease the skin's susceptibility to infections such as fungus, bacteria, yeast, and viruses. This also allows the skin to be more pliable, which can lead to skin damage.

When choosing a moisturizer for the feet, there are certain ingredients to consider.

Lanolin is a grease-based oil from lamb’s wool and closely mimics the skin's own oils. This can help maintain a barrier that protects the skin from cracking and is less susceptible to
evaporation.

Glycerin is known as a Humectant, which helps draw moisture from the environment to keep the skin hydrated.

Mineral oils are good moisturizers and are less susceptible to evaporation.

Petroleum also helps to maintain a barrier that helps decrease evaporative dryness.

Although aloe vera is water based and has a higher chance of evaporation, it can be combined with less evaporative ingredients. Aloe is good for times when sun exposure is higher as it protects from free radical molecules that can damage and increase skin aging.

In order to protect the body's largest organ -- the skin! -- in an area of the body that takes a great deal of abuse such as the feet, hydration is key to maintaining soft healthy durable skin. Don’t forget to moisturize your feet!
